Vision of the Program
In the current “urban age”, each of the different design disciplines (Architecture, Urban Planning, Urban Design and Landscape) claim the city as their own field of interest, research and intervention. As the boundaries between these disciplines are becoming increasingly blurred however, it no longer seems possible to consider buildings, building complexes and public spaces independent of the urban contexts and regional hinterlands in which they are situated. Similarly, it is necessary to comprehend that the built environment is shaped not only by designers (architects, planners, urban designers, landscape designers, etc.) but also political authorities, local governments, developers, various non-governmental, professional and community organizations, urban citizens and the public at large in different ways.
Founded by Prof. Sibel Bozdoğan and Prof. Murat Güvenç and inaugurated in 2017, the MSc. Program in Architectural and Urban Studies aims to play a pioneering role in promoting this intertwined, multi-scale conceptualization of architecture and the city, in both history and the contemporary world.
Why should I apply for this program?
The program provides a fertile research platform where architecture and urban studies can develop each other and share new knowledge, research methods, representation techniques and interdisciplinary insights and invites its participants to produce original graduate-level research on the design, production and representation of the built environment from critical, interdisciplinary perspectives.
The graduates of this program are trainned to work in architecture, urban design, planning and landscape disciplines not only as design professionals in practice, but also in a myriad of different capacities such as academics, theorists, historians, critics, writers, curators and project consultants among others.
Scholarship and Fellowship Opportunities
The program is funded. It also provides the opportunity for its participants to take part as fellows (paid researchers) in the processes of current research projects carried out by faculty members.
Who Can Apply?
You do not have to be a graduate of architecture to apply to the program. Our program is open to graduates from departments related to architecture (interior architecture, urbanism, etc.) or all departments under social sciences.
Our Collaborations
Our program is in collaboration with the Istanbul Studies Center (ISC) and Salt Research Institute and will continue to produce work together.
