The ‘Brain & Mind’ graduate education and research program is gearing up to welcome its first cohort of students

A novel interdisciplinary education program, Brain & Mind, enriched by the expertise from the realms of medicine, natural sciences, and engineering, is being developed to address pressing inquiries including: “How do the mechanisms governing information processing in the brain function? How does the Brain Create Mind? What is the information structure of the mind? How do biological changes influence the structure of the brain and the mind?”

The Brain & Mind graduate education and research program, conducted in collaboration between Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine and Kadir Has University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences, is preparing to admit its first students in the 2024-25 academic year. The program will approach neuroscience research fundamentally with three types of data: examination of brain tissue, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), and electroencephalogram signals (EEG). Data obtained by medical doctors and molecular biology experts at Bahçeşehir University Faculty of Medicine will be examined by experts in computational neuroscience, including mathematicians, physicists, and data scientists at Kadir Has University Faculty of Engineering and Natural Sciences. With this collaboration, the foundations of a program aiming to integrate experimental research, data modeling, and analysis at world standards are being laid. The program will accept a limited number of master’s and doctoral students and offer fully funded education and living support to admitted students with full scholarships. The lower boundary of the scholarship will be aligned with TÜBİTAK’s fellowships.

The administrative part of the program will be overseen by Türker Kılıç (Brain and Neurosurgery), Deniz Eroğlu (Complex and Dynamic Systems), Nuray Söğünmez Erdoğan (Bioinformatics), and Timuçin Avşar (Molecular Biology and Genetics), all of whom will actively contribute to education. Additionally, respected researchers in the fields of neuroscience, bioinformatics, molecular biology, genetics, radiology, and mathematics will provide support to our program. Furthermore, students will receive training in industry and research centers outside the medical faculty environment in the field of brain and mind. At the Medicine Faculty, they will have the opportunity to enhance their qualifications by learning how neuroscience data is obtained through on-site learning and direct access to data, and how it is analyzed using machine learning methods by the School of Natural Sciences and Engineering. While researching problems in neuroscience, students will gain experience in computational and experimental methods required to solve these problems, and if they wish, they will be able to work with expert researchers in their fields on their own generated problems and data.

To be a part of the program, and to benefit from living support and a 100% scholarship opportunity, you can apply here. The application deadline is June 24, candidates who have completed the application form will be interviewed on July 1-5.You can find information about the program on the pages of the COMPUTATIONAL APPLIED SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (THESIS) and COMPUTATIONAL APPLIED SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING (PhD).
