Master of Arts in Political Science and Public Administration(Thesis)

OVERVIEW 

The M.A. program in the Department of Political Science and Public Administration at KadirHas University is designed not only for students who want to pursue an academic career but also for professionals who wish to work in NGOs, private or public sector, and international, supranational, national and local organizations. With its interdisciplinary approach and numerous elective classes, the program allows students to improve themselves in line with their unique interests and master the contemporary topics in political science and public administration. 

Thanks to the proficiency and wide scope of academic interest of the department professors, the students who graduate from the program will also be proficient at following related prominent research fields: Comparative Politics, Political Geography, Critical Geopolitics, Political Attitudes and Behavior, Non-Western International Relations Theories, Urban History, Urban Geographies, Gender Studies, Foreign Policy, Turkish Politics and History, Labor Studies, Migration and Mobility, Data Visualization and Mapping, Political Theory, Critical Border Studies and Surveillance Technologies. 

The MA program in the department of Political Science and Public Administration, with its prestigious academic personnel favoring a multidisciplinary approach, offers the opportunity to be part of national and international projects as well as attend distinguished conferences and publish academic research with the support of the most respectful professors. 

The students are expected to write a master’s thesis.

The medium of teaching in the M.A. program is English.

 

FACULTY AND THEIR RESEARCH AREAS 

Prof. Dr. Lerna K. Yanık 

lernaLerna Yanık completed her bachelor's degree in the Department of Political Science and International Relations at Boğaziçi University. She received her MA and PhD degrees in Political Science from Georgetown University. Prof. Yanık’s main areas of study are political geography, Turkish foreign policy, non-Western international relations theory and critical geopolitics. She was a visiting professor at City University of New York and Cambridge University in 2009 and 2017. Currently, she is principal investigator of the TUBITAK 1001 project titled: “Earthquake and Women: Identification, Investigation and Solutions Proposals for Social Vulnerability Sensitive, Disaster Risk Reduction and Preparedness Planning in Istanbul”. 

 

Prof. Dr. Dilek Cindoğlu 

2Dilek Cindoğlu completed her bachelor's and master’s degrees in Sociology at Boğaziçi University. She received her PhD in Sociology from the State University of New York at Buffalo. Prof. Cindoğlu’s main research areas are gender studies, migration, labor markets, and qualitative research methods. Prof. Cindoğlu is also the Coordinator of Women’s Studies PhD Program at Kadir Has University. She is the principal investigator of the TUBITAK project named “How is the De-medicalization of Birth Possible”. 

 

Prof. Dr. Himmet Murat Güvenç 

3Murat Güvenç received his BA, MA and PhD degrees from the Department of City and Regional Planning at Middle East Technical University. His main areas of interest are urban geographies, urban history, data mining, visualization and mapping and digital/human studies. Prof. Güvenç is also the Director of Istanbul Studies Center. He still pursues the TUBITAK project titled “Web-GIS Supported Site Management Protection Model in the Context of Rural-Urban Continuity of Historical Cities: The Example of Iznik”. 

 

Prof. Dr. Mary Lou O’Neil 

4Mary Lou O’Neil completed her BA in Humanities from Evergreen State College. She obtained her MA in American Culture and Literature from the University of Wyoming and in Women’s Studies from the University of Exeter. She received her PhD degree in American Studies at the University of Kansas. Prof. O’Neil’s areas of interest are gender studies and reproductive rights. Prof. O’Neil is the founder of the Women and Family Studies Research Center at Kadir Has University. Currently, she is the principal investigator of two international projects, Horizo2020 GenderEX: Gender for Excellence in Research and BUDGET-IT (Building Gender + Equality Through Gender + Budgeting for Institutional Transformation) 

 

Asst. Prof. Berkay Ayhan

5Berkay Ayhan is the Head of the Department of Political Science and Public Administration. He completed his BA in the field of Economics at Gazi University. He then completed his MA in Political Science and Public Administration at the Middle East Technical University. He obtained his PhD in Political Science from McMaster University. Dr. Ayhan’s main research areas are political economy, public administration and public policy. He is the principal investigator of the TUBITAK 3501 project titled “Household Debt in Turkey: Causes, Patterns, Consequences and Public Policy Recommendations”. 

 

Asst. Prof. Sibel Karadağ 

6Sibel Karadağ completed her BA in Social and Political Science and her MA in European Studies at Sabancı University. She received her second master’s degree in Social Policy at the London School of Economics and Political Science. She obtained her PhD degree in Political Science and International Relations from Koç University. Dr. Karadağ’s main research areas lie in critical border studies, migration, surveillance technologies and incarceration, political sociology, postcolonial theory, labor studies and political philosophy. Currently, she is the Graduate Program Coordinator. Dr. Karadağ was a visiting researcher at Yale University in 2018. In 2021/22, she was the principal investigator of the Mercator Stiftung-Istanbul Policy Center international project titled “On the Eve of a New Deal: Scope, Actors and Methods”. 

 

Asst. Prof. Kerem Yıldırım

7Kerem Yıldırım completed his BA in Global Politics and International Relations at the Middle East Technical University – SUNY joint undergraduate program. He received his MA in Middle East Politics at the University of London. He then obtained his PhD in Political Science and International Relations from Koç University. Dr. Yıldırım’s research areas are comparative politics, political behavior and attitudes, political parties and political communication. He worked as a postdoctoral researcher at Duke University in 2019. He is the principal investigator of the TUBITAK 3501 project titled “The Relationship of Local Governments’ Activity Reports with Transparency, State Capacity and Voter Behavior”. Concomitantly, he pursues the international project named “Democratic Accountability and Linkages Project”.
